On the eastern Mediterranean coasts, in the tiny territory today occupied by Palestine, Israel and Libya, the Hebrews and Phoenicians grew up. The Hebrews settled in the first great monotheist region, while the Phoenicians explored and traded throughout the seas of the known world, setting up colonies such as Carthage.
